I modified various extract-transform-load processes written in Python and SQL to improve the data quality of reports received by Cigna's care providers. For testing, we used Python's unittest library, and FitNesse with Java. I worked with the python-jenkins API to make utilities that tracked when Jenkins jobs were not green, who or what caused them, and what git commits they corresponded with so that teams in our area would push less faulty code to Development. I also did some unit testing in Jasmine for our Angular.js front end for these reports and did the bulk of the work to upgrade that front end from Node 4 to Node 10. This was a 10 month contract. The employer was Apex Systems and the company I worked at was Cigna. Show less

Handled a variety of production support related responsibilities, including communicating with and helping out customers who had difficulties using the applications we supported, finding errors in Java programs, making and improving various Java utilities (some examples later), writing documentation for utilities and procedures we used/followed, handling user stories in Rally, handling incidents in Remedy, checking daily policy and form batch jobs (usually loads), performing special form and policy loads at customers’ requests, and deploying forms, diagnosing errors in batches and java programs, and following deployment procedures related to monthly “versions” (deployments of the latest versions of our applications to production). Examples of utilities I created/improved: • I created and maintained a utility that examined files containing thousands of select entries from another department’s database and directly compared this data with entries in our own database. For each entry in the other database, it logged whether our database had zero, one, or multiple matches. This helped our departments correct inconsistencies between our databases. • I created a utility that could search a directory for XML files containing specific producer codes in order to identify which producers were targeted by one of our batch processes on specific days. • I improved a utility that loaded policies into one of the applications we supported and record their information in the appropriate database using information from various excel documents. I identified and fixed a bug that caused multiple database entries made by this utility to have identical timestamps. Show less

Created an MSWord based reporting application used by Risk Control to store various data from frequently updated Word documents and templates into a SQL Server Database. By running the application weekly, the department was able to keep track of notable changes to these documents and templates. The new system significantly improved the maintainability of these documents and templates via the following components: • Template Inventory: Leverages OpenXML SDK and the MSWord Object Model to gather template general, bookmark, macro, and user form information storing this data in SQL Server via LINQ2SQL. • VBA Export Utility: Exports MSWord VBA project components to user defined target directory so that changes to embedded VBA components can be managed more intelligently via SVN/GIT etc. Off Shore Training – Documented new functionality and conducted technical training for off-shore team members who will be maintaining this application going forward. Documented, architected, designed and implemented a re-write of an existing MS Excel based tool that employees use to assess themselves on various job-related skills. The information captured by this tool is used to identify department/site training needs/gaps. Worked closely with end users to gather and document system requirements. Built various functions in VBA to automate Excel functions, manipulate cell contents, merge assessment criteria source data, and publish assessment results to a central repository for reporting purposes. End product improved the quality of data captured, shortened the amount of time required to perform assessments, and simplified the management of evolving assessment criteria via a singular assessment criteria data repository.
