    • Associate Professor of Physics
      • 2011 - Present

In addition to Physics courses, I teach a variety of Mathematics and General Education science courses. I have also taught capstone courses for science majors and a freshman seminar course. My research interests fall into the Boyer Model categories of Scholarship of Discovery, Scholarship of Teaching, and Scholarship of Application:Under Scholarship of Teaching, my interests are primarily in physics and mathematics education, quantitative reasoning, statistical reasoning, and critical thinking.Under Scholarship of Discovery, my interests are in using techniques from mathematical physics to understand complex systems.Under Scholarship of Application, I continue to write and assess the effectiveness of materials (e.g., lab manuals, textbooks, handouts, computer-graded assignments and assessments, etc.) for a variety of courses. Some has been work-for-hire, some has been in collaboration with colleagues, and some has been for my own courses. Show less

With Dr. Delia Heck, I co-directed Ferrum College's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a campus-wide effort to improve students' critical thinking skills and dispositions. One of my primary responsibilities was statistical analysis of campus-wide assessment data.

    • Assistant Professor of Physics
      • 2005 - 2011

As a teacher, I have:• taught both algebra- and calculus-based introductory physics courses as well as their associated labs;• helped redesign the calculus sequence with Mathematics Program Coordinator Dr. Bryan L. Faulkner, including the writing of a new calculus book and creation of a laboratory sequence for calculus;• taught pre-calculus and calculus courses;• taught a course in physical chemistry; • taught independent studies in engineering statics (i.e., the intricacies of static mechanical equilibrium), multivariate calculus, and quantum mechanics;• taught capstone courses for science majors that are designated as both writing and speaking intensive;• taught a freshman seminar course with emphasis on critical thinking and information literacy;• taught various laboratory science courses designed for non-majors including a Physical Science course designed for students seeking licensure in Elementary Education and one that I created called Bad Science in Movies. As service to the College, I have:• Served on the Curriculum Committee (2006-2010), chairing it from 2008-2010;•Helped mentor new faculty, including co-directing the New Faculty Program (2007-2009);•Served on the Nominating Committee, the Library Committee, and Faculty Council Show less
