The Y Academy (as part of the YMCA) is an alternative school that specializes in delivering a modified, personalized, version of the Ontario curriculum to middle/high school students with learning differences. I worked with various groups of 10th graders in three of their subjects- World Religions, Learning Strategies and Resource and Remediation. As a teaching assistant, I was mainly involved with one on one academic support and scribing but I was also given the opportunity to create a mini unit of my own which I then guided the students through. What started out as a community project of The Indus International School, IICS is now functioning as a full fledged educational establishment from grades 1-8. Students come from severely low income (being below the poverty line is a requirement for admission) backgrounds where it is very likely that they are the first literate member of their family. The school uses English as their medium of instruction and follows an independent primary years program that is based loosely on the IB PYP program. What is more unique about this school is the fact that their teachers are also from similar socio-economic circumstances, a way to create even more of a community impact. While they all have at least finished high school, many have not completed any type of post secondary education. Once hired, these individuals are enrolled into a rigorous, on site, 9 month teacher training program before they can begin in the classroom. As a volunteer, I took on the role of teacher mentor/trainer. I conducted workshops on English Language acquisition skills, student centred learning and multiple learning styles. Additionally, I spent several hours in the classroom- delivering model lessons, conducting teacher observations and feedback sessions as well as enhancing already existing teaching resources.
