    • Police Detective-Firearms Analyst (Part-time)
      • Oct 2012 - Oct 2014

After being certified for use of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ NIBIN (National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) in 2012, I worked full-time for 6 weeks in the SPD Evidence Unit and Washington State Patrol Crime Lab (Seattle) as a Firearms Analyst. One of only three members of the Seattle Police Department certified by BATF as an IBIS/NIBIN operator, I continued doing so part-time, 1-2 days per month, in addition to my regular Detective assignment. Duties included: •examination and test-firing of all crime guns seized by Seattle Police Dept. Two fired cartridge casings (FCC’s) are collected from each test fire in order to conduct forensic analysis of the unique markings left on the casings by their individual firearms. •use of Forensic Technology Inc.’s cutting-edge Brasstrax3D high-resolution sensor technology to capture micrometer-level 2D and 3D topographic information for regions of interest from FCC’s of .17 to .50 caliber pistols and rifles, and from .410 bore to 10-gauge shotgun shells. For centerfire cartridge casings this includes the breech face and firing pin impressions on the primer, and the ejector mark. For rimfire cartridge casings, this includes the firing pin impression. Images are uploaded to the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS), which then cross-references with similar data from the other regional IBIS systems that comprise the NIBIN. •use of Forensic Technology’s Matchpoint+ system to visually compare FCC’s with correlation results from other Test Fires or FCC’s collected from crime scenes from throughout the region or even nationwide (in NIBIN), to look for High Probability Matches between cartridge casings that can link one crime to another, or an identified recovered gun to previously unconnected crimes.
