The Felippe Equine Immunology Lab researches common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), a condition characterized by impaired B cell differentiation and function, decreased immunoglobulin production, and recurrent bacterial infections. Having developed and optimized an RT-qPCR assay to measure the deleterious expression of endogenous retrovirus in affected bone marrow samples, I am now investigating the potential influence of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in this disease. Honored to have not only assisted multiple veterinarians dedicated to the conservation of local wildlife in Indonesia but also learn from the teams of directors, public engagement representatives, and surveyors at several distinguished wildlife conservation organizations, including The Alliance of Integrated Forest Conservation (ALeRT), WWF, International Animal Rescue (IAR), and Animal Sanctuary Trust Indonesia (ASTI). This summer I received the opportunity to work alongside some of the animal rights movement's best at the Farm Sanctuary. I learned about the intersections of animal welfare, marginalized groups' human rights, and environment sustainability each week; the complexities of animal sanctuary management each day; and the necessary considerations when caring for farm animals with post-traumatic stress each hour spent on the farm. Thank you to the Farm Sanctuary team for enhancing my ability to promote the well-being of all people and animals. Show less
