The Felippe Equine Immunology Lab researches common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), a condition characterized by impaired B cell differentiation and function, decreased immunoglobulin production, and recurrent bacterial infections. Having developed and optimized an RT-qPCR assay to measure the deleterious expression of endogenous retrovirus in affected bone marrow samples, I am now investigating the potential influence of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in this disease. This summer I received the opportunity to work alongside some of the animal rights movement's best at the Farm Sanctuary. I learned about the intersections of animal welfare, marginalized groups' human rights, and environment sustainability each week; the complexities of animal sanctuary management each day; and the necessary considerations when caring for farm animals with post-traumatic stress each hour spent on the farm.
