Research Scientist

Dec 2010 - Nov 2013
Conducted R&D in cloud computing, green data centers and job scheduling. - Investigated a new holistic framework aiming at making data centers “greener” without being too intrusive and compromising quality of services. The chosen approach combines inter-disciplinary capabilities such as wireless sensor network, computational fluid dynamics modeling, data mining and workload distribution to target both the operation and design aspects of data centers. - Developed optimized cloud resource provisioning strategies and job scheduling disciplines for latency-sensitive jobs submitted to a cloud-based (EC2) system, and at the same time minimizing resource cost. - Parallelized EADS’s Spares Management (A320 landing gear parts) and Optimization (SMO) software over a cluster of distributed computing resources. The project also investigated various scheduling strategies for this SMO application. I was the principal investigator. Show less

Jan 2008 - Dec 2010
Investigated scalable techniques for network-aware server provisioning, zone mapping, load distribution, etc., to create highly interactive, distributed media environments. We developed and successfully deployed a large-scale performance monitoring system for distributed media environments over PlanetLab. I led the research & development of this project. Activities included outlining research directions & plan, conducting required research and implementation. I also helped to supervise a project team consisting of a number of research engineers. Feb 2006 - Jun 2007
Conducted R&D in grid computing and virtualization. Projects included: - Developed scheduling mechanisms for Grid computing infrastructures using popular resource managers and job schedulers such as Torque, Sun Grid Engine and Maui. - Investigated an end-to-end virtualization-based solution (Xen, VMWare, QEMU, VServer, etc.) to provide customized and flexible execution environments for heterogeneous Grid computing systems, with an emphasis on supporting legacy scientific applications. - Shared Services Platform: this is in collaboration with HP Labs USA. I was in charge of the Virtual Environment Service which provides automatic, on-demand virtualized resource provisioning and software deployment & configuration. Show less
