eBay Business
-
Jan 2013 - Present
Over the past seven years I have run my own eBay business which has developed my commercial acumen and entrepreneurial instincts. The business has taught me a good understanding of my customer needs, my competition, sourcing, pricing, managing cashflow and the importance of customer service backed up by clear and frequent communication. Having started my business whilst at school, I have since had to balance the demands of my academic studies alongside the business and the two part-time jobs. My market knowledge was developed through attending auto-jumbles which require me to make real-time decisions on purchasing stock based upon product quality, profitability and cashflow. Regular interaction with sellers at the auto-jumbles has improved my negotiating skills through the ability to read sellers and gauge their flexibility on pricing. From attending various trade shows and selling on eBay, I have built up a network of personal contacts who are on the lookout for specific items, which enables me to swiftly and profitably sell my stock. I have an Excel spreadsheet where all of my purchasing costs, sales, P&L, and fees incurred are recorded. This has allowed me to track my business's profitability over time, along with managing my stock and cash flow levels, which in turn has helped me to decide when and what stock to purchase.

I was involved in building extensions, loft conversions and renovations; whilst developing a range of both hard and soft skills. Constant communication was required, both with the site manager and my colleagues. My role involved the day to day management of building supplies, deliveries and forward planning of work to be completed. I have developed strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills during the five months I spent in this position. 1 Weeks Work Experience BP Intergrated Supply & Trading, Structured Products
-
Jul 2015 - Jul 2015
I spent a week on the trading floor working on the Structured Products bench. I was given an introduction to price risk management, derivatives and other financial instruments, along with being shown around the various benches on the floor. My task was to prepare a summary report on which firms hedge their oil exposure but were not currently BP clients. Through researching on the internet, I was able to produce a comprehensive list of European companies that could be approached as potential customers.

1 Weeks Work Experience BP Downstream Marketing
-
Jul 2014 - Jul 2014
Placed in a group of 12, over the course of a week we were given an overview of the principles of marketing, the processes BP use to market its products throughout its various businesses, and how the company presents itself to the general public and online via social media. Being placed in a group with new people was an excellent experience, learning about BP’s marketing operations from business representatives and communicating our different ideas amongst our group throughout the week. Working as a group, we researched, identified, debated and settled on two aspects of BP’s marketing where we felt competitors had an advantage. The first area identified was motorsport; as an avid viewer of Formula One at the time, it had always struck me as odd that BP or Castrol had no visible sponsorship with any of the teams. I felt that BP was potentially missing out on an excellent way to not only market its Castrol lubricants, but also BP’s range of Ultimate fuels, particularly as most followers of motorsport are typically on the lookout for new and innovative products to improve the performance of their vehicles. At the time BP appeared to have a relatively low-key presence on social media and the group felt that there was an opportunity for BP to improve its online presence.

Jul 2013 - Jul 2013
I gained an introduction to how oil supply and production is managed and taxed at BP’s production plants from oil fields in the West of Shetland Pipeline. I was given a task to propose a configuration of oil rigs and tie backs for the marginal oil fields in the North Sea in order to best maximise the number of barrels a day that could be obtained from these fields.
