I was carrying out experiments in which synthetic inhibitors of Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UDG) were to be synthesized, protein crystals acquired to be further analyzed using X-ray crystallography. Bacteria colonies acquired via classic restriction ligation cloning were used for expressing cloned vectors to synthesize proteins that could act as UDG inhibitors. Experiments were designed and supervised by Doctor Renos Savva. I learned how to manufacture bacteriophage therapeutics, including setting up and maintaining cell and bacteriophage cultures or acquiring appropriate bacteriophage concentration (phage titer) necessary for phage therapeutics. Additionally, under the supervision of Doctor Ryszard Miedzybrodzki, I was responsible for carrying out an investigation on a correlation between phage-mediated bacteria lysis and additional therapeutics used. Routine Test Dilution, spectrophotometry and both fluorescent and electron microscopy were amongst necessary tools used for this experiment. Moreover, I have been involved in writing a scientific review on the topic of antimicrobial resistance. Show less

I assisted at quality control of radiopharmaceuticals produced at the centre, which were later used in hospitals and biomedical research institutions in Warsaw and the surrounding area. I learned how to use devices such as chromatographs and spectrometers, necessary for quality control. I had the opportunity to use some laboratory space at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences to carry out my first official research project titled ‘The influence of chemical substances extracted from leaves of Ailanthus altissima on germination of Sinapis alba’s seeds’ I have learnt how to prepare my own experiment, analyze data and present the results of my work in front of others for their evaluation. Additionally, I had to meet deadlines and organize both my workplace and personal timetable so that the investigation finished before the specified time. Show less
