The academy was started in 2014 by Dr Cyan Brown, a medical doctor and public health activist to help shape and create an equal society for all. The academy focuses on investing in women’s leadership as we believe it is key to global developmental progress. We recognize the need for an intersectional and contextually relevant lens when approaching this work. We have three core pillars we focus our work on 1) Leadership We believe that leadership is an essential skill for everyone, and especially young women, to have and develop continuously. We focus on leadership at an intrapersonal, interpersonal and collective level to provide a holistic and balanced approach to leadership that can meet the changing needs of our society. 2) A community of support We believe in creating a space for connection, synergy and support where young women can thrive. Having a diverse network of peers, mentors and role models helps to encourage new ways of thinking, doing and creating impact in the world. Our academy focuses on intentionally building this community for women who want to reach their full potential. 3) Giving back Service is a core value of what we do at the academy. Both the online course and the in-person course allow participants to give back to their community in a meaningful way. We believe in mutually beneficial relationships which centre around respect, dignity and willingness to serve our communities. We have had over 3000 women graduate from our program and continue to advance our efforts to mobilize more women leaders. Show less

In this role I am a 2022 Bioleadership fellow, where I am unlearning and learning new paradigms of leadership and about grounding my work in the planetary health space with a set of values and a way of working that is sustainable, connected and generative. The mission of the Bio-Leadership Project is to change the story of leadership by working with nature. We are a movement of people and organizations, changing human systems to be more resilient, regenerative, and designed to protect and regenerate our planet. Bio-Leadership is about challenging an outdated story of progress. It is about building organizations and communities that protect and replenish our world. Most importantly, it is about reconnecting human progress back into our planet’s web of life. Working at this deep paradigm level, growing a culture of interconnection, is where we support the greatest change. More than an idea or methodology, Bio-Leadership is about working as a human ‘mycelium’, a movement sharing knowledge, stories and the courage to grow a new generation of human systems that care for our world. Exploring the untold narratives of junior doctors in South Africa Documentary Series The Covid 19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the importance of frontline healthcare workers worldwide. However, even before the pandemic, junior doctors in South Africa had started speaking out about the negative impacts of working in a system that pushes them to breaking point. The last 14 months of the pandemic have amplified this strain and have left many healthcare professionals burnt out and unable to cope. This docuseries was produced by Dr. Cyan Brown, a medical doctor with a keen passion for public health and helping to build more innovative, sustainable and inclusive healthcare systems and communities. The documentary is supported by Atlantic Fellows based at Tekano, a fellowship programme which the producer, Dr. Brown, is a graduate of. Tekano believes in addressing the inequities in the South African Health System in an effort to create a healthier, more equal nation with improved access to healthcare and services for all populations in South Africa. This documentary was funded as part of Dr. Brown’s social change initiative during the Fellowship journey. “Our generation of doctors has to start advocating for building a more sustainable healthcare system that looks after all healthcare workers." The documentary focuses on three in-depth interviews with three young doctors. The hard facts about why this happens are well known, and so this documentary rather seeks to explore the narratives of junior doctors in a response to the culture of burnout in healthcare and it is hoped it will be used as a tool to spark people sharing their stories to catalyze honest conversations that can start to change these issues.
