Synthesized spherical nitrogen-doped carbon nanoparticles by performing a weekly two-step process of solvothermal treatment followed by pyrolysis. Various non-precious transition metals were integrated into the carbon network using precursors, either during or after carbon synthesis. Incorporation of atomically-dispersed transition metal into the network of nitrogen-doped carbon leads to significant enhancement in activity of nitrogen sites producing one of the most promising classes of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of the polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). After synthesis, I helped assess the 2D morphology of these materials using TEM and the elemental distributions using EDS. Show less
