Cary and I were responsible for admissions, new student orientation, student advising, thesis supervision, and other tasks in the University of Chicago's Committee on International Relations. Cary played a central role in helping to rationalize our admissions process and maximizing the impact of our financial aid offers in order to enroll top candidates and improve the overall quality of the program. He also helped map out strategies to re-brand the program, which had a reputation for realist approaches to IR, at a time when the end of the Cold War was making these approaches less valued. In the end, the program began to emphasize the political economy of globalization and human rights, while continuing to sell its realist credentials. The program was better and stronger by the end of Cary's tenure.

Dr. Ward was a collegial professional associate who brought a wry wit and an exceptional well-read background to his work teaching and advising undergraduates. He taught Introduction to International Relations and the Senior Seminar for Thesis Research. He cheerfully engaged in support of various student extracurricular activities and was renewed to the maximum allowable time for this type of appointment.
