Jared Spurlock
In a group of high performing alpha-type leaders, as is often the case in the Marine Corps, one of the hardest things to do is to stand out amongst your peers. Back in 1996, when a large group of hard-charging young 2nd Lieutenants straight out of Infantry Officer Course (IOC) joined Second Battalion, First Marines, it was immediately clear to everyone (subordinates, peers, and seniors alike) that Craig Himel was the best amongst us. Craig, bar none, was the most disciplined, dedicated, and ambitious of the entire group of young officers - he was simply better in all performance areas, yet he was also the most humble amongst us. Throughout my 23 year career in the Marine Corps - I have always strived to be just a little bit more like Craig - who is a true servant leader in all regards. Thank you Craig for your friendship, leadership, and example... I am certainly a better human being and leader from following your example after all this years.
