During my ten weeks spent at Fiona Stanley Hospital I gained experience in the following five areas: oncology (three weeks), upper gastrointestinal tract (two weeks), respiratory (two weeks), ICU (two weeks) and cardiology (one week). Duties involved: • Applying evidenced based practice, ensuring the best quality care for all patients. • Application of individual dietetics health assessment, interventions and management. • Hands-on experience while attaining a firm understanding in the different diet-disease relationships across multiple areas and the appropriate nutritional therapy was applied for the patient • Identifying the need for further dietetic interventions, different types of tube feeding and when it was required and appropriate for a patient • Prescription of modified and special therapeutic diets for specific medical conditions and supplementing of diet with nutritional supplements. • Prioritisation skills - I am able to identify the frequency and duration of dietetic assessment and where review sessions are appropriate for patients. • Managing a full caseload independently, balancing inpatient/ outpatient clinics and additional dietetic department responsibilities. • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide the best health outcome for the Show less

During my six-week placement at WA Country Health Services I developed brief interventions and resources on growth faltering for children aged between 0- 4 years old. The aim was to support families/ carers in making healthy dietary choices that would promote adequate growth and development. The interventions and resources were designed to develop the capacity of child health professionals in rural and remote parts of Western Australia (WA). Duties involved: • Initiating consultation and development of partnerships with stakeholders • Ability to work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment • Understanding the social determinants of growth faltering and the impact on Aboriginal health in rural and remote communities • Prioritisation of work load and effective time management • Identification of appropriate programs, protocols and guidelines already in place across Australia. • Development of age specific clinical pathways to improve nutritional status and prevent growth faltering • Implementation of quality improvement principles for community development • Final written report presented to WACHS The age specific growth faltering clinical pathways I developed are currently being trialed in preparation for implementation across rural and remote child health facilities throughout WA.
