The Ocean Acidification Program at Mote was created to research and understand responses of ecologically important species — like corals — to projected levels of ocean acidification. The program is currently developing two research facilities, one in Sarasota and one at Mote’s Tropical Research Laboratory on Summerland Key in the Florida Keys for studies of how corals and other reef species will react to changes in pH as well as climate change (ocean temperature). These seawater systems include both flow-through and large mesocosm-based designs.

A.I.S. Inc. is contracted by the State of MA to support the state in collection data for the MRIP (Marine Recreational Information Program). A.I.S. will provide the state of MA with fisheries technicians to intercept fishermen at coastal locations or aboard “for hire” recreational charter vessels during and at the completion of their fishing trips. The time and locations for sampling are randomly selected by NOAA Fisheries protocols. Interviewers obtain actual catch data on species and numbers caught, species and numbers discarded, and obtain a limited number of length and weight measurements of whole harvested fish. The catch data in turn is applied to the effort data to estimate the total numbers of fish caught, harvested and released for most recreationally important marine species. All this data is used extensively by fisheries biologists and fisheries managers to assess stock levels as well as to assess regulations and plan future management.
