The Master Thesis encompassed two components to perform a quantitive analysis of the flow field within a Gust Erosion Microcosm System (GEMS):1. Generation of a 3D-Numerical Model utilizing CFD-Software FLOW3D® to replicate and simulate the flow field in the GEMS. -Utilization of AutoCAD to create 3D Geometry of GEMS device.-Several CFD setup parameters were analyzed and compared, including, but not limited to: surface property roughness, appropriate y+ application, mesh density, and turbulence models. 2. Quantitive comparison and cross-verification of the results generated by the numerical model to data collected in the laboratory. - The specific flow field data points that were analyzed included: the applied shear stress to the bottom, and the radial and azimuthal flow velocities at different heights and radial distances. Research Assistant in Project FAUST

Research Project FAUST: For an Improved Understanding of Estuarine Sediment Transport Project Faust investigates the complexity of fine sediment dynamics in tidal estuaries, and addresses the basic challenges in numerically modeling sediment transport at the water / soil interface. My role as the Research Assistant consisted of:- Assisted in field work and the extraction of site-specific sediment core samples from the Elbe and Weser estuaries.- Determined sample’s properties, which includes: particle size and distribution, bulk density, and water content.- Performed physical experiments from sediment samples, including: soil/sediment mechanics and composition, sedimentation and deposition studies, and erosion test with a Gust Erosion Microcosm System (GEMS).- Generated and maintained comprehensive documentation of each site-specific sediment sample for data comparisons in MATLAB and Excel. This included: recorded specific details of sediment composition, observations of change during experiments, and the analysis of results.- Aided in the instruction of Surface Water Labs for Bachelor students. Drainage and Wastewater Engineering Intern

My role as the Drainage and Wastewater Engineering Intern consisted of: - The investigation, analysis, and reporting of sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) events, in accordance with the NPDES and USEPA regulations, throughout King County in Seattle. - Generation and maintenance a SSO event database for an improved identification of systemic sewer line issues for SPU. - Analysis and proposal of appropriate remedial action(s) of the SSO events entailed: utilization of GIS, computations of runoff based on weather events, review of technical documents and Department of Ecology reports, and communication with crew members. - Assistance in field work related to the various functions of the Drainage & Wastewater line of business at SPU, such as: identifying illicit stormwater drain connections and wastewater drainage line repairs and cleaning. University of Washington Ecological Restoration Project

Started in 2000, the UW-Restoration Ecology Network (UW-REN) goal is to educate and integrate student, faculty and community interests in ecological restoration and conservation. - As part of a task force, I helped conceive, develop, propose, implement, and manage a 1/4 acre ecological restoration project within Ravenna Park in Seattle, WA. - Collaborated with community partners and stakeholders by developing goals and objectives regarding desired project outcomes, which involved: planning and designing the installation process and needs to monitor the restoration project. - Surveyed the topography of the field site using hydrology and sediment testing, plant identification, erosion assessment, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as an initial assessment of the project site. - Identified the diminished ecological functions at the Ravenna site and their influence on the degraded Ravenna site, and developed an implementation plan to assist in recovery of those functions.
