Very much a progressionary role from my time at D B Schenker; while Schenker are a massive conglomerate across the planet, IFS provide a much more specialised, higher quality service, with a greater focus on customer relationships and adhering to specific, unusual needs. Although I was still booking transport commands, the methodology was very different. I developed personal relationships with my clients and maintained their accounts much more closely, using the resources at my disposal to get them the most ideal service for their needs at the best price. I was required to have an intimate knowledge of the global transport markets in regards to currency conversion, container rates, shipping schedules, as well as details of dozens of local hauliers and other providers. Again, I was managing invoices also, not just in regard to our customers but our own suppliers billed to us, cross referencing costs and sales against jobs and official communications in order to ensure that the business was making the money it should be.

This was a customer facing advisory and sales role in a typical mechanics for vehicles. It was my job to sell products and services to customers, book vehicles in for work and maintaining our schedule, arranging callouts with our team of mechanics, and maintaining our stock. Here I learned the importance of familiarity the nature of the products you're selling, memorising intricate details about various parts or tyres and what type of car or lorry they go on to, the different qualities and capabilities of specialised brands, what any indivisdual repair or service will involve, so as to be capable of accurately advising our customers about what their best options are. It was also my role to manage a small team of callout fitters, sending them out to roadside breakdowns or punctures, keeping them moving, and sensibly arranging their routes and schedules in order to maintain efficiency and profit. The company has contracts with many different businesses across Northern Ireland and is specifically responsible for overseeing the safety and maintenance of their lorry fleets, and it was also a part of my role to stay on top of this. I had to record records of dozens, sometimes hundreds of different vehicles for many different companies, keeping track of the state of their tyres, when they were last replaces, the tread depth measurements, when the vehicles were last serviced and when they were due to be again, and organising our team of staff in such a way as to make sure they would be available to perform additional checks or functions when necessary. I had the unique opportunity a few times to manage different branches on my own due to staff absences, overseeing everything that went on at those branches, once for as long as a full week, in regards to the accounts, money handling, workshop maintenance, planning and co-ordination with other branches, opening and closing the building (no small task for a sizable workshop), all on top of my regular duties.

Primarily admin and customer services, it was my job to take requests from clients via phone or email in regards to the transport of goods, usually throughout Europe although not exclusively, and convert them into a serious of automated commands to various depots and warehouses throughout the continent that would see the goods delivered to their destination in an efficient, prompt, and professional manner. We would oversee these jobs as they progressed, insuring there were no hiccups or issues along the way, and it was also my responsibility to correctly invoice these jobs and maintain the files on our customers.

A travel agent not for holidays, but for businesses and institutions, I was stationed specifically in a University department. It was my job to create and action travel itineraries for events like business meetings, educational conferences, and student transfer schemes, selling flights, train tickets, taxi services, accomodation, and other travel needs at a marked rate to various customers. It was vital to oversee each individual job very closely in order to ensure things ran smoothly. If a flight was missed or delayed, for example, often entire itineraries would need to be reworked, sometimes at very short notice. This role required me to be fully switched on at all times, closely monitoring each of my arranged itineraries to make sure everything was running smoothly, with no room for hesitation if it wasn't. Although it was unfortunate for the company and ultimately the reason for my termination, the covid pandeminc provided me the unique opportunity towards the end of my time with this company to get heavily involved with accounting, learning proper credit proceedures and a great knowledge of Microsoft Excel, as all available hands were moved to the accounting department as new bookings not only ground to a halt, but old bookings were being cancelled by the hundreds.

A basic retail role in my local corner shop, this was where I was taught my astute customer service skills, in a way that only dealing face to face with the general publin can. Primarily I was stocking shelves, maintaining the warehouse, operating the register, assisting customers with finding their way around the store and understanding deals or membership benefits, as well as balancing the registers and safes. Additionally, I was lucky enough to be trained in the Royal Mail post office branch that was ran from inside the store, learning to operate many specific and confidential functions, such as issuing pensions, helping customers change their tax codes or register vehicles and such for tax or insurance, sending and receiving parcels and letters, and exchanging currency.

Although I was initially hired just as a waiter, I wound up becoming involved in basically every function there is at a chippy. Waitering, register management, fry cooking, dish washing, floor mopping, food hygeine maintenance, batter mixing, none too glamorous or skill intensive, but certainly taught me the meaning and value of hard work, operating as a team, customer service, and keeping to time constraints.
