This was a three-month job opportunity to work alongside engineers contracted by the National Health Service and other industrial and commerce businesses to observe and assist them. In this time my key responsibilities were to listen and undertake assisted tasks in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning systems, primarily across the Glenfield and the Leicester Royal Infirmary Hospital. The maintenance of these systems was then reported on forms which were sent to the Managing Director. Throughout this I received training in the importance of engineering, the maintenance of these systems and the environmental impact of the substances used in air conditioning. On many occasions this included the phasing out of potentially harmful gases to the atmosphere. In addition, I received physical training in the usage of the equipment used to repair and maintain these systems. Furthermore, my responsibilities included training in accountancy using Microsoft Office to record job allocations, purchase orders the businesses budget expenses and petty cash. The position gave an insight into the complexity of engineering and why it is important to address these issues for customer health and safety. Moreover, this job highlighted to the importance of teamwork and clear communication between the different departments within the National Health Service and the structure needed to support the development of these contracts overtime.
