Joint Fires Observers are trained service members qualified to perform three main duties: Request, control, adjust surface to surface fires, and provide close air support (CAS) targeting information to a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) or a Forward Air Controller - Airborne (FAC "A"); as well as talk directly to the pilot by authority of the JTAC. Additionally, JFO's provide autonomous Terminal Guidance Operations (TGO) as any kind of visual, voice, mechanical or electronic measure (such as lasers or smoke grenades) thus providing targeting information to the pilots in order to accurately and efficiently deliver aircraft ordnance onto ground targets.
