Bio
Charlotte Hill Vandenburg
I had the pleasure of mentoring Cole as well as working alongside him on many projects over multiple years. He is deeply conscientious and driven in all his work, and eager to receive feedback and advice. When working in collaboration with him, I could always count on him putting great care, attention, and energy into the project. In creative work, particularly, Cole brings an optimism and drive that is balanced with realistic, practical strategies. If I get the chance to work with him again, I'd be delighted.

Cole is a stand-out student and member of the Friends of Graphic Design student group at Portland State. He has worked with me for the past year in my capacity as Director of the student group. Cole is cheerful, polite, exceptionally capable and organized. I know that when I put out a call for volunteers that he will be one of the first with their hand up. His contributions to our events and programs help enhance student life, and connect Portland State Graphic Design to the larger Portland design community. To mention just one instance, he did an admirable job of co-coordinating our Open House during Design Week with another student. Cole designed promotional materials and wayfinding, and handled many of the organizational tasks that made the event a success. His leadership on this project freed me up to work on some of my other responsibilities, and I was able to do so knowing that everything would be handled professionally. I have no doubt that Cole will be an outstanding and dedicated contributor to any team who is lucky enough to have him!

In 2021, I expanded my lifelong hobby into a profitable ecommerce site where people can purchase digital building instructions for my custom LEGO firearms, swords, and other replica props made from the construction toy. I've also done commission work for a real-life gun company in promotion of their flagship product, and I have provided refreshed branding and logo design for fellow Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) entrepreneurs. [For more of my experience with the company, see the next Bi-Mart entry below.] In September '15, I left Bi-Mart to study at PSU full-time and then came back the next summer on a part-time basis. When my class-load picked up again, the company offered me a special 'on-call' position with unlimited scheduling flexibility so that I could continue to be on their employee roster and bypass the rehiring process whenever I helped them in the future. Sales Clerk and Cashier; Safety Committee Chairperson
-
Apr 2013 - Sep 2015
At Bi-Mart, I've served customers in every department (including pharmacy). Starting as a cashier, I was quickly moved onto the sales floor and cross-trained in each section. I've received freight shipments, conducted inventory audits, assembled large display items, assisted in loss prevention, merchandised a whole department by myself, sold firearms, delivered my own verbal advertisements over the PA system, and have hand-transferred items between stores. I was selected for a restricted-access position in the pharmacy, and I have floated across five store locations. My managers also elected me as the Chairman of the Safety Committee, and I coordinated a monthly inspection of my store's safety equipment; the company has sent me to a product knowledge seminar in Eugene.
