The Policy Agendas Project, also called the Comparative Agenda Project, is a UT Austin-based group focused on compiling and coding data on the policy processes of governments around the world. In my particular project, work was done to align PAP's voting record data on the US Congress with that of Voteview, an organization that analyzes congressional votes through the prism of ideology. As a research assistant, I worked to code and match congressional votes between PAP data and that of Voteview. This involved filing through congressional records and extensively pairing thousands of points across datasets, while also working to ensure data is consistent and correct. Show less

Working as a TA, I had the opportunity to support an honors-level course in developing academic research skills. The course, "The Nature of Inquiry", explores the various methods through which research is conducted, and culminates in students creating their own hypothetical research proposal. I assisted in this course by guiding students through the coursework, meeting with them one-on-one to help improve on individual needs, and helping the course professor develop and improve the course. As part of the Political Economy and Sovereignty team, I helped in research on the political economy of indigenous lands, territories, and dependencies, which face many of the promises and pitfalls of sovereignty -- even if applying the word "sovereign" to them requires scare quotes. I helped look into the creative ways that these semi-sovereign political units navigate their liminal status and pursue their development goals when it comes to international relations. The focus was on semi-sovereigns linked to the US: American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) jurisdictions; US territories; and US Freely Associated States (Micronesia, Marshall Islands, and Palau). I also spent a semester on the Data4Development team, which focused on research about international financial institutions and the presence of diversity in various forms within those institutions. In particular, I spent time researching and cataloguing the educational backgrounds of national representatives at the International Monetary Fund. Show less
