Through the research opportunities that were offered to me at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, there were a couple projects that are worth mentioning. One in particular was a project dealing with the role of creativity in the minds of engineers that develop designs. The vehicle used to study this research was a world class design competition labeled Design Wars. Design Wars was organized by the research team (4 people), and proved to be a large success in the acquiring of data to study the benefits of creativity in engineering design. The other research project that I had worked on dealt with the applications of biometrics and ergonomics in providing a workplace that was adaptable to individuals with disabilities- with a focus on motor disabilities. The goal of the research was to develop a prototype workstation that accommodated a broad range of disabilities. Not only that, but the workstation would be developed in such a way that a biometric device (fingerprint scanner) would recognize the worker, and automatically adjust the workstation to accommodate any needs that the worker might have. Overall, the research at SDSMT proved to be a large success to my development as an engineer, and will continue to benefit me in finding new ways to adapt and change in a very dynamic world.
