LA 3002 Informants of Creating Landscape Space. Exploring the bases upon which designers make decisions about the nature, location and experiential qualities of spaces they are creating. The course is based upon the premise that these desired spatial characteristics emerge from an examination of the interaction between the site and context where the spaces will be created and the characteristics of the behaviors that will occur in the spaces. The course examines alternative ways of thinking about these dimensions of space-making, and it will make a transformation from three-dimensional modeling of spatial qualities to two-dimensional representation of these qualities using conventional and non-traditional graphic techniques. I have been making art in the landscape since I was very young- and my philosophy has been to make it, enjoy it, walk away for others to enjoy…. I would not go back, would not document it, I would leave it alone. In the past few years, I have changed my relationship with these installations, and have started to talk about them, share them, make them a part of my life instead of having them on the outskirts of my life. I use my art as a way to engage others, to connect or just to start chatting with people who I may not have opportunities to meet usually. Show less

    • Intern For City Council Member Gary Schiff- Research Assistant in Practice
      • Sep 2012 - Apr 2013

Interned with City Council Member Gary Schiff, helping to write an ordinance to legalize flea markets. The College of Design’s Landscape Architecture Department worked with City Hall to turn this position into a RA in practice. Schiff’s office was working towards allowing flea markets in Minneapolis, which were banned back in the 60’s for unsightliness. Coal Dorius’s role was to research flea markets around the United States looking at trends in their bylaws, as well as issues that determined different management strategies. Dorius also studied the importance of temporary markets as a way to energize vacant space in our communities. The findings were compiled with a draft ordinance written by Grant Wilson, License and consumer services manager and Steve Poor, Zoning Administration & Enforcement Manager. The ordinance was presented to City Council in early spring 2013 and flea markets were legalized. Show less
