Drew is such a team player. I had the pleasure of working alongside him during our 2019 Alumni of Color Conference. As an alum, he worked with us side by side. Drew took initiative where needed and supported us every step of the way. Thank you for setting the example.

I had the pleasure to work with Andrew during his one year as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer in Colombia. Mr. Williams was recruited to assist Peace Corps Colombia in the establishment of a youth development project and support the work of one of our key partners, Futbol con Corazon. We recruited highly qualified, mature and independent Volunteers. We had high expectations for the work especially using this as a opportunity to build Peace Corps reputation as a viable partner with the organization. Mr. Williams met and exceeded these expectations both for Peace Corps Colombia and for the partner organization. Assigned to an impoverished urban neighborhood, Mr. Williams immediately integrated into the community. Gaining instant credibility with his host organization, they gave him broad responsibilities in the implementation of their youth development project. Using his creativity and passion for working with youth, he developed and implemented a multi-faceted four-week project that incorporated sport, education and culture using the 2012 Summer Olympics as the backdrop. This activity was enthusiastically adopted and embraced by the host organization. The activity incorporated over 600 children over the four week period. In addition, Mr. Williams utilized his experience and knowledge in curriculum development to review Futbol de Corazon’s youth development curriculum and provide quality feedback towards improving the methodology which merges sport and youth development. Furthermore, Mr. Williams’ skills and expertise was utilized by members of the Volunteer population, including his design and implementation of a one-week sport camp in a community recovering from devastating flooding. In addition to the skills listed above, I want to highlight what I feel are Mr. Williams’ strongest traits: his positive, can do attitude and his innate leadership skills. Mr. Williams’ attitude reflects his positive view of himself and the world. He is a practical optimist. Furthermore, his positive attitude led to an overall attitude change with the Volunteer population, which speaks to his natural leadership abilities. Mr. Williams carries himself with dignity and he naturally aspires to leadership positions. I personally watched him lead a group through a session where they were required to provide feedback to Peace Corps Colombia. He lead the discussion, listened to all sides and built up consensus, and presented the information in a positive, constructive manner. I could easily fill several pages praising Mr. Williams. He is a rare individual who has a combination of intelligence, deep love for learning and self improvement, outstanding interpersonal abilities and strong field experience. This combination allows him to stand out compared with any population. Mr. Williams has an extremely bright future. I strongly, fully and enthusiastically recommend Mr. Williams.

Director of Community Engagement
-
8/2017 - 7/2018
I taught at an independent high school in San Francisco as a faculty member in our Human Development Department (HD). This academic department launched in 2014, offering an integrated curriculum of College Counseling, Community Engagement, Cultural Competency, Health & Wellness, and Learning & Meta-cognition. Before becoming the Director of Community Engagement I was an Instructor in the HD Department in its first three years. The Community Engagement program at UHS is designed to support students as they prepare for, engage in, and reflect on their volunteer work in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. I designed curriculum, taught classes, and worked directly with students to help them connect with meaningful volunteer opportunities. A core part of my work was establishing and developing relationships with the non-profit organizations that provide service-learning and volunteering opportunities for youth. In my role as a Mentor at UHS, I provided academic advising and all-around support to a group of fifteen students over the course of their four years at the school.

TRAININGBefore beginning my work as volunteer, I completed a 3-month in-country Pre-Service Training (PST) in the capital city of Praia on the island of Santiago.PRIMARY PROJECTI was assigned to work at the Centro de Juventude São Vicente (CEJ-JV) in the city of Mindelo. My primary responsibilities were to teach classes, facilitate workshops, and support the teen and young adult leaders at the center. I reported to the Coordinators and Psychologist of the CEJ and worked in the regional coordinator of the National Volunteer Program (PNV/UN Volunteers). The "CEJ" is part of network of centers throughout the country operated by the Ministério de Juventude (Ministry of Youth). The centers serve Cape Verdeans aged 18-35, offering professional training classes, enrichment programs, academic support, counseling, and outreach activities for the surrounding communities. An important part of the work at the CEJ is helping young community members develop their ability to earn a living. This involves teaching/co-teaching classes and working in one-on-one settings with aspiring entrepreneurs to help them develop business & project plans. Projects that I supported involved artisan furniture, culinary arts, graphic design, a fish exporting business, and the launch of a local non-profit youth center. SECONDARY PROJECTWhile living in Mindelo I worked with two soccer clubs as a youth coach. I led youth clinics for CD Falcões do Norte and was the head coach of the U17 team at Gremio Desportivo Amarante.- Gremio Desportivo Amarante info:https://gdamarante.cv/home/
