Freelance Writer
-
Aug 1983 - Present
I have been a freelance writer since my first byline in Grand Rapids Magazine in the early 1980's. My work has been published in numerous local, regional, and national publications over the years. These include newspapers, alternative newspapers, and national magazines. Alternative Weeklies: San Antonio Current, New York Press, and Funny Times. National Publications: Rider magazine and the BMW MOA (Motorcycle Owners Association) magazine. Newspapers: Traverse City Record-Eagle, The View - Belleville MI carried my weekly column, Cliff's Riffs, for a couple years and I was awarded "Most Hate Mail in One Year" by Editor Sarah Rigg. A column of the same name, Cliff's Riffs, was published in the Advance Newspapers for several years. I profiled High School athletes and physically challenged athletes who were under the radar and told their stories. Over the last 20 years my wife and I owned a small business in Lowell, MI (Chimera Design) and I have written numerous pieces for our local paper: The Lowell Ledger. I have been a weekly contributor to the Lowell Ledger since June of 2022 covering local events and people as well as writing many op/ed pieces about Environmental issues and Michigan politics. I have written about and lobbied for the closure of Pipeline 5 in the Straits of Mackinac ever since learning of it. In fact, I was so upset about Line 5 that it prompted a run for Michigan State House of Representatives in 2016. I was unsuccessful, but I did bring awareness of Line 5 to people of all political stripes and in that sense the campaign was a winner. I was elected to the Lowell City Council in 2019 for a four year term after being appointed to it in 2018 to fill a vacated position. I traveled to Lansing and Washington DC to lobby on behalf of taxing internet sales along with other concerned retailers from Michigan. Watched then Governor Snyder sign it into law. A friend told me about the Society of Environmental Journalists and I immediately joined in 2023. Show less

I want to put an end to the PAC control of Michigan legislators. Green Party candidates cannot accept money from any PAC - even if we agreed 100% with everything they stand for.
