Director of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, an independent national NGO founded in 1967 and based in London. JCWI provides legal protection services for asylum seekers, and those individuals and families experiencing difficulty with immigration, nationality, visa policy and EU free movement law. Through it's legal protection work and decision never to seek or accept direct central or departmental government funding , JCWI has had an important impact for most of it's existence in lobbying for change in government and through test cases in the courts. It's profile grew over the period I was Director, particularly in it's refugee work. This included a successful Court of Appeal challenge in the 1990s on behalf of asylum seekers by JCWI. Because of it's bar on accepting central government funding the funding sources for the NGO were varied and as Director I was the principal fundraiser and so have detailed experience of funding applications and raising income through activities such as training and publications. During my period as Director JCWI employed it's highest number of staff and volunteers. Show less
