The Wild Olive Tree Café is a social enterprise, and I joined the board in 2022. I bring a knowledge of the city’s rough sleeping and begging population, many of whom benefit from the café’s pay-it-forward campaign and receive free coffees and lunches. I was also chosen because of an existing working relationship with the café: I provided informal catering/hospitality advice as they wrote their business plan in 2014, and joined their interview panel for a café manager in 2017. • Urban Co-ordinator
      • Jan 2017 - Apr 2023

I grew Urban - a dynamic membership-based space, open to adults in Glasgow with complex needs, including addiction, homelessness, poor mental health, and those in the UK asylum system - from a part-time service to a 5-day timetable of classes and activities. Members set life goals and receive relational support. Before the 2020 national lockdown, Urban had 17 different activities running each week, a team of 6 staff and 40 volunteers, an active membership of over 100 clients, and a waiting list to join. As we began to navigate the national cost of living crisis, I had to find creative solutions in order to maintain our client reach. In 2022 I ran Urban with 40% less staff hours and 50% fewer volunteers while continuing to support the same number of clients. Show less

Kitega Community Centre works to empower children with disadvantages and disabilities, to advocate for disability rights, and to foster community-owned development. I worked as a long-term volunteer after spending two summers on short-term placements. I provided learning support to the teachers, leading sessions in arts and crafts, music, yoga, and games. I mentored a youth group and boys football team and provided business management support to the Village Community Banking groups. I wrote and collated an extensive programme of resources to train new volunteers. Show less

As team leader I was the day-to-day mentor for a group of between 4 and 10 people, giving 3 motivational talks per day. I had to be enthusiastic, inspiring, and caring in many difficult situations. I took particular pride in seeing new fundraisers flourish in such a tough environment. I worked as part of a small team who all pitched in and took part in every aspect of running the centre. I was involved in everything from leading groups on the outdoor assault course to preparing dinner. I was given extensive responsibility for teaching: I wrote and led the series; using slideshows, question and answer sessions, interactive games, and songs to teach stories from the Bible. After my seasonal contract ended I was asked to return as Centre manager on a short-term basis. This involved liaising with schools and other contractors, writing weekly staff rotas, and managing the office, as well as all of my usual duties. Show less
