Arc champions new thinking in environmental sustainability and place-based regeneration. Our purpose is to help people, places, economies and communities, to work better by connecting with the natural world. We work with land managers, developers, local government, community groups, regulators and universities, providing professional services, research partnerships, public events and seminars. Our experience ranges from single dwellings to district masterplans, from holiday parks to power stations, and from county towns to coastal resorts, fixing sites that already exist and designing those still to come. We’ve worked on coasts, rivers, farms and woodlands, in cities, towns and villages, managing built and natural spaces up and down the country. The evidence is overwhelming that a healthy environment delivers lasting social and economic benefits, sustains land and property values, reduces crime, builds community cohesion and shapes better places.Arc work closely with Artecology whose work focuses on new innovations in integrated green-grey infrastructureArc and Artecology are based in Yaverland, Sandown Bay where we are lead partners for the Bay Coastal Community Team, working to spark coastal revival in Sandown Bay, Isle of Wight. We are currently running the Shaping the Bay programme. In our day-to-day business, and in our spare time, we try to put all we believe into practice - from our work to support Island biodiversity, be it bees to trees, to our free nature-related events that reveal the lifelong inspiration of the Isle of Wight’s natural world. Through this Arc Ways programme, we make ecology accessible to all and ensure it's at the heart of development. Show less

Artecology is all about bringing biodiversity to the built environment. Seawalls and piers, bridges, tunnels, river channels and roads; shops, schools, industrial units and housing estates; town squares and city rooftops - the world of ‘grey infrastructure’ is our speciality. We are one of only a handful of companies worldwide developing commercial systems for constructed wildlife habitats, as retrofits and as integral design specifications. A small, dedicated team, Artecology combines design and manufacture, with an industry and university research network, public outreach and community regeneration. Our Artecology installations become functioning parts of local ecosystem services, bringing wildlife encounter into everyday places and adding natural resilience and protection to buildings and infrastructure, both marine and terrestrial. We combine our built installations with specialist planting, creating hotspots of wildlife activity, providing life-cycle resources for birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians, fish and marine ecology, creating enriched environments for wildlife and people. www.artecology.space Show less

    • Community Investment Officer for Nature & Environment Projects - Natural Wight, Green Army, 4Bs
      • Feb 2011 - Jan 2014

Natural Wight offers nature-related activities, events and conservation days encouraging people, in particular housing association residents, to explore the beauty and diversity of the natural environment here on the Isle of Wight. Natural Wight began life with funding from Natural England and Big Lottery Fund as part of their brilliant Access to Nature programme. It swiftly became one of their flagship projects and was awarded further funding to sustain impact. Pan Park Safari, Big Bug Day, Little Bug Day, the Natural Wight Kite Festival and many more fantastic events and activities brought nature to new audiences with a legacy for people, wildlife and even for our partners that is still evident today. (See http://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/10382390, www.naturalwight.co.uk). Natural Wight continues to create nature-related activities to engage and support residents. The award-winning Green Army offers conservation volunteering opportunities for young adults aged 16-25 not in work or education. Part of the Natural Wight project, over 300 young adults including many in supported accommodation, have taken part in conservation work all around the Isle of Wight, joining me and a team of specialists from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Arc Consulting and Landscape Therapy for fortnightly conservation days. 4Bs Birds, Bees, Bats,& Bugs is our ‘Making Space for Nature’ initiative, encouraging residents to explore, engage and benefit from 'nature nearby' and also helping Spectrum to support biodiversity across its new and existing estates and green space. A ground-breaking approach in each of the communities we have worked with! Hedgerow Harvest – two year programme of community engagement to bring the Tree Council’s HLF-funded Hedgerow Harvest project to the Isle of Wight.
