For my second student teaching placement, I was placed in a primary grade and had to pleasure of working alongside Mrs. Laurie Parke in her classroom at Imperial Elementary. Due to the unique circumstances of COVID-19, I started off teaching students online via Google Meets. During the first week of October 2020, school sites were open. Twenty two of my students came back face-to-face, while eight students learned at home. I had to manage both sets of students during instructional time. As a teacher candidate, I planned and implemented engaging and meaningful activities for all disciplines and subjects. I accommodated to students’ individual needs and made sure materials and resources were accessible for students learning at home. I also monitored student understanding through assessment and activities and provided feedback and support to students. When my mentor teacher was out, I was the classroom’s substitute teacher, I managed the classroom’s daily activities on my own. For my first student teaching placement, I was placed in a 5th and 6th grade newcomer program at College Park Elementary. Newcomer programs are designed for recent immigrant students with little or no English proficiency. These students thrive in specialized instruction in both English and their home language. My classroom was diversely represented by seven different languages. During my placement, I formed a positive and collaborative relationship with my mentor teacher. Because of this strong partnership, we were able to work together through the unique time of distant learning due to COVID-19 regulations. I created lesson plans to differentiate instruction to support each individual student’s needs while reflecting on the state standards. I conducted meaningful lessons and live teachings via Zoom that activated student learning during a unique time. I formed positive relationships with the students and engaged the students in meaningful experiences in the classroom. Show less
