Sea Kayaking Instructor/Guide
-
Jun 2020 - May 2021
My primary role here is to guide sea kayaking trips at a number of locations along the south Dublin coast, however, the most popular tour is a return trip from Bullock Harbour to Dalkey Island. This is a 6km round trip and is largely focused on the history and wildlife of the area, especially the significant grey seal colony living on the island. My secondary role is to design, implement and assess beginner kayaking lessons based on the Canoeing Ireland level 2 skills syllabus. My primary role at Foaming Fury was to guide guest down the class 2/3 section of the Barron River that flows through Wooranooran National Park in North Queensland. My primary role at Aquaterra was to guide guests down a 20 km stretch of the ganga River in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. Along the way, we navigated multiple class 3/4 rapids in 16 foot, oar-frame rafts. My secondary role was to provide safety for single boat trips from my kayak. Instructor
-
May 2019 - Oct 2019
In May 2019 I was hired as an Instructor at the Northwest Outward Bound School's Oregon Programme. My role here was to design and facilitate educational outdoor experiences with my co-instructor, as well as manage high risk situations involving a mostly teenage student population. Courses would range from 7 days to 30 days in length and we would strive to provide opportunities for personal growth. We would also seek to improve the student’s knowledge of local wildlife, indigenous history, and environmentally friendly backcountry practices. Although some courses involved mountain elements, most of my work was carried out on the Deschutes and Lower Salmon rivers in Oregon and Idaho. Managing an unfamiliar teenage population in a backcountry setting like this presented many unexpected challenges that required fast problem solving skills in order to be dealt with effectively.
