Writing articles and other content about climate change and sustainability. Sometimes translating big ideas into simpler terms through graphics. Interested in writing about intersectional environmentalism. Not very interested in writing about "sustainable products" or corporate-sponsored greenwashing nonsense. • WordPress Web Designer
      • Aug 2018 - Sep 2021

What did you do as a web designer? I designed and developed websites for small, woman-owned businesses. I found clients online, conducted Zoom interviews with them to determine their needs, made recommendations based on those interviews, and designed and developed their websites. In addition to building their sites, I provided guidance on content marketing strategy, SEO, email list building without intrusive popups, Pinterest marketing, helped them set up privacy policies and other legal pages, helped set up email inboxes, and I did my best to encourage accessibility. Why did you stop? Ultimately, I took a pause from working as a web designer because I found that I'd buckled myself into a particular niche that I didn't feel was helping many people: Business coaches and various lifestyle coaches. While there are certainly some coaches out there doing helpful work, not many of these online coaches are accessible to anyone in the working class, not many have the experience they claim to, and not many are trauma-informed or doing their work with intersectionality in mind. At the end of the day, I want to be working in climate because I'm deeply concerned about the state of climate change denial around the world, and it seems unreasonable to work on unrelated projects. That being said, I learned a lot by working as a freelance web designer. Tools used: WordPress Various page builders (Elementor, GenerateBlocks, Gutenburg) CSS and Javascript Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, and Indesign Various email marketing programs (ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, MailChimp, MailerLite, Flodesk) SEO tools like SEMRush, Ahrefs, Keyword Chef, and Screaming Frog Social media apps and scheduling tools (Plann, Planoly, Tailwind) GSuite, Gmail, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office online. Basic PHP and SQL for working in databases and the back end of websites. Show less
