In my role as Publishing Assistant I was responsible for the day-to-day administrative running of the company but also had an involvement with most departments in the company. Some of my responsibilities for other departments were as follows: o Adult editorial – fact checking manuscripts, proof-reading a first manuscript and then cross-checking this with an amended manuscript to ensure all corrections have been made, proof-reading eBooks. o Children’s editorial – I updated and edited my own title under supervision from a senior editor. Other tasks included title idea generation; coming up with title ideas and then carrying out competitor research and ideas of how our book can fill a gap in the market. Proofreading eBooks, cross referencing the eBook with the printed copy to ensure all illustrations and correct fonts have transferred over properly. o Foreign Sales – compiling sales packs for foreign sales trips, drop-sending sample material or translation files to foreign publishers and co-ordinating foreign sales send-outs. o UK Sales – keeping the website updated with the most recent AI’s, taken from Biblio, and ensuring all information is correct. Also, making up sales packs and dummies for sales trips. I also proof-read ebooks for the company on a freelance basis. Show less

My course at London College of Communication encompassed all of publishing and I learnt about editorial, marketing, publicity, production, digital, sales and rights. As part of the course we were required to develop a book from idea generation right through to printing and binding. My MA dissertation was on the topic of children's literature in digital and examined whether children are started to favour a digital book or whether the physical book still has its merits and popularity. I have been at Bloomsbury twice. Firstly for a month on work experience and then as an editorial temp. My main task as a temp was to provide assistance to Publishing Director Michael Fishwick and Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Pringle. This included diary management, booking travel arrangements, receiving and collating their mail, ensuring that the correct manuscripts were forwarded to them for editorial meetings and taking messages for them when they were out-of-office. I was also required to use publishing system Biblio to find titles and send cover jackets to the Bloomsbury office in Sydney. Whilst on work experience I worked within adult editorial covering a wide selection of tasks. These consisted of proof checking e-pub copies of texts and jacket covers, typing up and copywriting review quotes, attending editorial, jacket design and marketing meetings which gave me an overview of the finer details of the publishing process and writing rejection letters for both unsolicited and agented manuscripts.
