Working with a Unit Manager, our unit’s function as part of the Heritage & Research Department is to collect, document, transcribe and archive audio-visual and documentary data concerning the multi-layered historical evolution on Robben Island. To this end we routinely facilitate site visit interviews with stakeholders who are representative of this multi-layered history. The transcription and analysis of such data also forms part of our core duties. We also liaise with and assist academic and institutional researchers with their Robben Island-related work projects. The research-data we collect forms the basis for our tourism narratives and exhibition strategies. Our work programme is primarily guided by our UNESCO inscription detailing the conservation of this site in respect of its rich cultural, political and social history and this is depicted in our institutional Strategic Research Agenda, Interpretation Plans and Visitor Management Plans, all of which are conceptualised through multi-stakeholder engagements. These guidelines form the basis of our institution’s Integrated Conservation & Management Plan, which serves as a balanced scorecard to our multiple stakeholders. Show less
