    • Work Placement
      • Mar 2013 - Jul 2013

In my first year of studies at Edge Hill University, I undertook a work placement at The Arches Primary School situated in Blacon, Chester during my spare time to gain extra experience of teaching physical education to children in curricular and extra curricular time. The children that were taught during this period had an age range of 7-11. As it was the summer term in the school, I was required to teach sports that were generally played in the summer such as athletics, cricket and rounders. The qualifications I had relating to those sports gave me confidence into what skills and techniques I could teach during a PE lesson or extra curricular sports club. The responsibilities on placement included that as a teacher I had to ensure that the facilities available to for me to teach in were hazard free and were available to use at that particular time. Also I had to make sure that the health and safety of the children is paramount, For example, if I did not carry out a risk assessment and a child got injuries because of a hazard within the facility, it would be classed a neglect towards the child and I could get stopped from teaching the children at the school. The equipment must also be in adequate condition to use so a check would always take place before the lesson to ensure that none of it was damaged and whether there is enough for the whole class to use. Finally I had to ensure that all the children had left the facility with their parents or a responsible guardian after an extar curricular activity. If a child’s parent did not arrive on time to collect them, then my responsibility as a teacher would be to stay with them until every child has left the facility with their parents or guardians.

    • Dragon Sports Coach
      • Jul 2012 - Aug 2012

In the summer of 2012, I was employed by Sport Flintshire to be an assistant coach for the Dragon Sports Scheme in both Deeside and Flint. During this time, I coached four to six year old children the basic fundamental motor skills of various sports such as football, tennis and athletics. On certain occasions, I had to help out the coaching of children aged seven to thirteen just in case there wasn’t enough coaches or if there was a low number of four to six year olds that attended on a particular day. I had the responsibilities of ensuring every session during the week was fun, safe and inclusive for the children. Also, I had to check all the equipment that was required for a particular session was in good condition and nothing was broken so the children could use it and prevent the chances of any child sustaining any injuries. Also, I had to make sure that I had a session plan ready for the session so I know what activities that being coached and the timings of them so that the session can start and finish at the correct time. Finally, I had to ensure that all the children had left the facility with their parents or a responsible guardian. If a child’s parent did not arrive on time to collect them, then my responsibility as a coach would be to stay with them until every child has left the facility with their parents or guardians.

    • Work Placement
      • May 2011 - Jun 2011

At the end of the first year of studies at Deeside College, I undertook a five week work placement in a Primary School. My choice of placement was specific towards my potential career path. The first responsibility I had on work placement was to ensure the safety of the children in any environment such as the facilities that the children use are in suitable condition to use for PE lessons. Alongside this, I had to ensure that I acted and looked professional at all times by wearing immaculate kit, being punctual and being a good role model to the children by behaving and acting in the correct manner during a lesson.
