In the Hodges Laboratory, my primary work focused on the determination of hydrophobicity coefficients of unusual diamino acids and incorporation into established models for use in the understanding and design of de novo designed peptides. Further work included the development of de novo designed antimicrobial peptides and involved computational modeling of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 HR2 subunit to determine potential efficacy of SARS HR2 coiled-coil peptide as a broadly neutralizing vaccine candidate for SARS-CoV-2 and future pandemic potential coronaviruses. Much of this involved skill in amino acid analysis, biological assays, lyophilization, peptide synthesis and purification, and peptide extraction and isolation from serum samples.
