During my internship, I collaborated with Unit Therapists on treatment and discharge planning for diverse populations within inpatient units. This involved providing comprehensive group and individual counseling to adolescents and adults with psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse histories, conducting intake and routine assessments to monitor progress, organizing and observing family interactions, and serving as the liaison to clinical and healthcare professionals. I also communicated daily with a multidisciplinary team, ensuring integration of industry best practices, culturally sensitive standards, and trauma-informed strategies. In this position, I customized treatment plans for each individual based on their goals and needs, as well as coordinated long-term placements and ongoing community supports upon discharge. In addition, I facilitated group education seminars on life skills and chemical dependency supports, promoting recovery strategies and improving individuals’ self-esteem and self-reliance. Finally, I cultivated and sustained therapeutic relationships with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, as well as acted as a support and mentor to family members.

This was my first internship, where I supported interdisciplinary teams within a residential treatment facility for adolescents. I screened potential clients and performed intake assessments to determine best approach to treatment, as well as provided detailed information as part of psychosocial assessment process, outlining individual treatment needs, coping skills in place, and potential trauma and triggers for each adolescent. I was also asked to maintain detailed records on each client’s progress, ensuring compliance with documentation standards and patient privacy regulations, including HIPAA. Finally, I developed customized treatment plans for each patient, integrating individual preferences and cultural needs. I truly enjoyed this role, as I had a chance to lead family counseling sessions for English-speaking residential clients and their families, as well as host group drug prevention classes for both inpatient and outpatient clients as part of CYT Cannabis Youth Treatment Series. I also provided individual therapy to clients both within the program and as part of home visits for offsite clients.
