Thesis Topic: An investigation into whether an understanding of the communication and safety culture of transit officers can lead to a reduction in their rate of injuries. My thesis confirmed that a better understanding of the occupational culture, work and communication practices of transit officers on an Australian metropolitan rail system, can reduce risk, de-escalate conflict and minimise injuries to both officers and passengers. The research involved completing the same training as the officers, working alongside them at night, then comparing my findings with worldwide 'best practice'. The subsequent training and communication recommendations are of major significance for public and community service positions worldwide.
