  In 2018, I had the honor of becoming a student-tutor for the iEducate program, whose purpose is to advance elementary students’ performance in poor and understaffed urban schools. This program hires college students from various universities and community colleges in the Houston area and places them in schools in need of assistance. I have been privileged to work with students from Smith Elementary where I primarily focus on increasing students’ problem-solving ability and performance in mathematics. While helping prepare students for the math test on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), I work in conjunction with the teachers and the principal to assure that we are maximizing the student’s potential to succeed. This collaboration ensures that both teachers and tutors are performing and teaching to our best ability. This work experience has taught me that community is built by inspiring one person at a time. Having a similar childhood background to many of the students allows me to interact with them on a personal level. I encourage students to listen to their teacher and to work diligently so that they can be prepared to go to college and reach their dreams.   As an honor student I was able to apply to the work-study position for the Honors College at Lone Star College-University Park. I aided in assisting secretary with various responsibilities, such as prepartion for Undergraduate Research Day. I organized materials and facilitated events for the Honors college as well.
