Participated in the NIH funded Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences research program through the Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Tufts Medical Center. I worked with Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Translational Pharmacology and Genomics Dr. Gordon Huggins to investigate the role of three protein kinases in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). I quantified the proteins from cardiac samples with varying disease presentations in comparison to the phosphorylated proteins and observed that the kinases were selectively activated depending on the source of the cardiac hypertrophy. These results helped inform future research in the Huggins Laboratory regarding the details of the role of kinases in the onset of HCM. Through this experience, I learned valuable techniques such as Western blotting, protein assays, and how to critically analyze results. My abstract and poster from the summer were accepted to present at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists, as well as at my home institution’s Fall Undergraduate Research Symposium.
