Internship In The Pathology Department at Cambridge University
-
Jul 2022 - Present
Working alongside Dr Protasio, I ran PCRs using 'universal' primers to amplify DNA from the pathobiome found in our avian samples. We will be using Nanopore to sequence the genomes and use computational biology to assign taxonomy to the range of parasites and bacteria found within the bird poo. We will link this data with health data taken from the individual birds we sampled from and hope to sequence mitochondrial DNA from the hosts to assign taxonomy of the host bird species. We will be researching the diseases and pathogens that are spread in bird poo and using migration data from Bird Ringers, whom we worked with closely, to interpret our results. I gained practical laboratory experience from this internship, routinely carrying out PCR and gel electrophoresis as well as designing primers for a PCR-approach to amplifying and sequencing mitochondrial genomic DNA. We used shallow sequencing methods alongside amplicon sequencing. I also gave presentations of my work progress, had supervisions with Dr Protasio to tackle the theory behind the work and learnt how to analyse scientific research articles.

I work as a science technician at Lancing College, helping to prepare chemicals and equipment for practicals across the science department. I also teach students aged 13-18 across a range of STEM, humanities and creative subjects. Utilising an array of new laboratory equipment to clean specialised glassware and make up large volumes of solutions, I gained a good understanding of what is required in the preparation of solutions and equipment before it reaches the laboratories for student-use. I learnt how to set up the “migration of ions” demonstration and made a plentiful supply of Nichrome wires for flame tests. I communicated the lesson plans to the class and maintained a quiet working environment

I volunteer as an Adult Leader Helper at 1st Worthing Brownies. I gained First Aid and Safe Spaces Qualifications. As a Brownie and Guide myself, I earned my Baden Powell Guiding award and have now completed both my Young Leader award and Adult Leader Qualification. I have just completed the Queen’s Guide Award and through this I have improved my leadership skills and been able to give back to my local community. From regional charity marathons to local bake sales, every week we do a different activity and I am very proud of doing my part to assure Girl Guiding’s continuation and to enable future generations to learn practical skills in first aid, cooking and camping.

I aided the negotiation of a sustainability-linked loan by amending the term sheet to incorporate the client's comments. I assisted a client in Hong Kong with a Loan Default on a Wind Farm Project in the Philippines by providing a comprehensive summary of their litigation defence using the force-majeure clause of the common terms agreement. I created a resource to compare Green Bonds with corporate bonds for a client, including specific requirements relating to the issuance of green bonds overseas. I enabled a bank to navigate Environmental Risk Management Guidelines and MAS for their subsidiary bank in Singapore.

I reviewed comments on a building contract and drafted a need of variation to reflect the requirements of smaller sub-contractors, who faced liquidity issues, to enable them to purchase the materials required for the construction project. I provided advice on a litigation dispute pursuing a claim against a subcontractor for use of non-ACM combustible cladding. I researched applications of The Limitation Act 1980 and The Defective Premises Act 1972 to find an angle for defence. I assessed the IP law implications of AI data processing for new data processing technology the firm wished to incorporate and created my own clause to make construction companies more responsible for their role in mitigating climate change.

I did work experience during a half term with Bennett Griffin solicitors. I was able to attend meetings with clients and carry out activities created for me, in order to learn about personal Injury, family, corporate, real estate and probate law. Working in an office across multiple departments, I learnt to sort through information to send to the appropriate departments and how sectors came together to work on complex cases.
