After completing a 3-month intensive training on linguistic, intercultural, and technical health skills, I integrated into my host community. I collaborated with local health workers on projects to improve maternal and childhood health outcomes. These projects included initiating a 15-person pregnant women’s group with monthly meetings and home visits and implementing a 30-student health club at the nearby secondary school with biweekly meetings. In concert with the local health clinic, I promoted local monthly vaccination campaigns and facilitated educational workshops on maternal health, nutrition, and hygiene. The Peace Corps volunteers in my region coordinated with Senegalese professionals to plan and implement a week-long girl's camp to encourage the participants to pursue their educational and career goals, cultivate their own opinions, protect human rights, care for the environment, have the knowledge to maintain their own health, and to encourage them to become active in their communities.
