In 2012, I made the daring decision to enter retail sales and marketing at the invitation of Maggie Sottero Designs, a bridal design company selling in 70 countries, most recently southeast Asia. Although this was a huge switch from pharmaceutical marketing and sales, I continue to capitalize on those skills to help brides across the globe access beautiful designer bridalwear.Focusing on the metrics that represent our business success, I designed novel marketing strategies with my team of 12 that shifted our strategies and increased our growth year over year. One major change involved distinguishing and separately promoting the three distinct lines within the company—Maggie Sottero, Sottero and Midgely, and Rebecca Ingram. Then, I branded each of these affordable couture lines separately, which helped them each succeed independently.On the customer side, we created a showroom experience that our customers’ buyers continually praised as being top in the industry. And for the 24/7 market, we built a portal so retailers could order our products online at their convenience. Both of these elevated purchase volume and created customer loyalty.I also led a shift to digital in advertising, and our new Google SEM and influencer strategy outperformed the industry. To maximize our engagement with our end customers, the brides themselves, I initiated a social media strategy focusing on Facebook and Instagram that yielded an average of +1000% global engagement with our ideal market.Finally, as a leader of a sales team of 20, I rebalanced our territories to reflect our brand differentiation and regional needs, which increased our sales in territories up to 60%. In this role, I trained novice sales representative to succeed in field sales. On the one hand, with deep domain expertise, I delivered deep information about the products they were promoting to physicians, such as their indications and brand values. On the other, I helped them understand the marketing and sales tools that would help them coach their customers, including software and other sales assets.My training program, “Real World,” simulated the sales representatives’ engagement with physician customers. This training plan offered live practice on sales strategies for engagement, physician segmentation, product adoption, and more. With this modeled experience, and with feedback and coaching, these sales representatives were ready to enter the field with strong sales capability, which largely eliminated expensive interventions to remediate their skills down the road.
