The Foreign Trade Association (FTA), created in 1977, is the leading association of European and International commerce that promotes the values of free and sustainable trade. We bring together representatives of hundreds of retailers, importers, brands and national associations to improve the political and legal framework for trade in a sustainable way. Our members reflect the diversity of the retail sector in terms of consumer goods, turnover and country of origin. In 2003, the FTA launched its first initiative, The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) in response to the increasing business demand for transparent and improved working conditions in global supply chains. It unites more than 1.900 companies around a development-oriented system applicable to all sectors and sourcing countries. In 2013, FTA launched its second initiative, the Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI) to improve the environmental performance in supplying factories and farms worldwide. BEPI provides a practical framework that can support all product sectors in all countries to reduce their environmental impact, business risks and costs through improved environmental practices.

The ICTI CARE Process is the international toy industry’s ethical manufacturing program that sees that factories producing toys comply with ICTI’s Code of Business Practice. To date over 2,400 Chinese factories are enrolled in the initiative employing more than 1 million workers. As Chief Executive Officer of the ICTI CARE Process (ICP), I am responsible for development and execution of programs to get manufacturers, brands, retailers and licensors to commit to sourcing only from ICP-certified factories. Today the program is available in 12 countries across Asia and North Africa. This entailed attracting factories to the program, recognition by the retail industry and supervising the audit/certification process. Apart from factory monitoring, in 2008 launched pilot projects for education and training of factory management and workers. From 2010, this program was supported by a PPP grant from the German Government (GIZ). Additional activities include a worker helpline that has been highly successful since its launch in April 2010 - today attracting well over 300 inquiries monthly. We also launched a tailor-made factory training program for factory management of facilities that failed to stay in continuous compliance with our standards.
