The subject of my PhD thesis is "Optimization of beamforming in an ORAN architecture". The topic will investigate beamforming techniques on antenna arrays. The goal is to experimentally evaluate a massive MIMO O-RAN system and to develop algorithms for the near real-time RIC to optimize the massive MIMO system. For example, the system should be able to reconfigure the beam configurations at different transmission and reception points (TRPs) based on the current channel and traffic conditions. Algorithms that compute these beam reconfigurations shall be developed and should follow different optimization requirements such as maximizing capacity, maximizing coverage, minimizing handovers, or minimizing energy consumption, to name a few. The internship concentrated on investigating channel estimation in cell free user MIMO in 5G networks and taking into account many aspects affecting the estimation quality such as inter-user interference, noise, spatial correlation and scattering effects caused by the antenna arrays.
