I have known Chris since 2003 and worked with him for over 10 of those years. Chris is a phenomenally capable manager and leader. He utilises his intellect, wit and passion to consistently ensure high performance from those around him and the organisations he leads. Chris has demonstrated a real ability to maintain the highest levels of performance from his teams whilst delivering significant levels of organisational growth. He is well respected and rightly so - Chris is a very impressive and capable leader.

Kirsty McHugh

Chris is probably the most effective leader I have ever seen in the public services sector. He combines a razor sharp understanding of performance with highly tuned political instincts and great relationship skills. I saw Chris become probably the single most respected leader amongst both commissioning government department(s) and his peers - quite some undertaking. He is also a thoroughly nice guy. Never underestimate him!

John Rowley

I have known Chris since 2009, and in particular through the period that he moved from Regional Director to Chief Operating Officer. He was an excellent Regional Director having both a forensic understanding of the operations but also a willingness to take a strong lead when decisions were necessary in the business. Chris led the team with authority and without fuss, commanding colleagues full respect. He earned his promotion to COO and quickly confirmed the trust shown in him by the business leadership and owners, adopting the same style and confidence as is his old role and being prepared to learn the challenges of management at Board level. Chris subsequently moved to become CEO for the UK operations of a substantial US publically owned international business, and developed further his skills and awareness of business, strategy and leadership at the highest level, which demonstrates not only a strong consistent upward development through management, but also great potential for his next role. I very much enjoyed working with Chris; he has a direct, no nonsense, yet personable style. He is a great work colleague, and is a strong asset to those organisations he works for.

The first task in the COO role was to turn round a failing payment-by-results contract which had losses of £3m in a six month period. It was a formative experience for me as we implemented a new delivery model and significantly reduced the cost base. Within six months we had improved performance by 40% while cutting the cost of delivery by a third. One year in to the role I worked with a with the CEO (Dean James) to develop and execute a strategy for growth which resulted in Deloitte taking a 50% stake in the business in late 2010 that was followed by a £750m contract win on the Work Programme in 2011. The implementation of the Work Programme over a three month period included taking on 750 staff via TUPE transfer, opening 50 new offices and the setup and roll-out of a supply chain of over 50 organisations. In the first three months of delivery, services were provided to over 60,000 jobseekers – more than double the expected volumes. I led over 1,500 staff across 85 offices. Over the first 18 months of the contract Ingeus were the leading provider in all seven regions they delivered in, and had the highest possible ranking on the DWP provider assurance audits and Merlin supply chain assessment. Alongside leading the operational delivery of Ingeus, I was involved in the diversification strategy that resulted in Ingeus entering the skills and health markets.
