Chris is unlike anyone I've ever worked with before: he's exceptionally smart, talented, and able to tackle anything with an ease and efficiency that can make the most insurmountable task look easy. He's a triple threat: he understands (and loves!) policy, he's a born writer and communicator, and he's got an incredible work ethic. Additionally, Chris' sense of humour and level-headedness make him one of the greatest people I've had the privilege of knowing and working alongside.

PIAC is a national charity that focuses on regulatory intervention, policy research, and policy advocacy in the public interest. Its main files are in telecommunications, energy, privacy, and consumer protection in regulated industries. As a board member since 2014, I've worked to create a responsive social media and communications strategy in response to external challenges. During this time I've also worked collaboratively to set the organization's strategic vision and oversee its implementation. Show less

Wrote informative, researched articles for a tech-savvy audience. Past topics include Canadian telecom and broadband policy, Canadian trade policy, and digital currency. My articles about the electricity consumption of bitcoin were the very first in mainstream news in 2015 and have been featured in "best of the web" roundups from Ars Technica, Bloomberg, and REDEF media. At OpenMedia, I worked closely with the campaigns team, engaging citizens online to provide input on digital policy for governments in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Thanks to our work, citizens took over 1,000,000 actions to stand up for online innovation, user privacy, copyright reform, net neutrality, and affordable access to broadband and mobile internet service. As fundraising manager, I led grassroots fundraising staff, strategy, and implementation for an 800,000–member online community, increasing monthly income by 150% from 2013–2016 and powering our team's growth from 5 to 16 members. I developed and monitored performance metrics for our web, email, and CRM workflows to ensure that we were tracking our results and engaging in continuous improvement. I A/B/C tested visuals, copy, and UI to increase results by up to 500%. This process of experimentation, measurement, and analysis allowed our team to set and exceeded performance targets, such as fundraising one-time gifts from over 22,000 highly engaged donors. Of course, fundraising success depended on quickly finding out what was important to our community. I extracted key issues from complex policy problems to communicate clearly and successfully engage citizens online to advocate for change and support our work. Show less

As a freelancer, I researched social policies vis a vis community services across jurisdictions. In preparing a detailed report for senior staff, I quantitatively analysed data from the World Values Survey and Statscan and performed a wide-ranging literature review. The result: an actionable, evidence-based report advancing a provincial strategy for community service delivery. As a communications intern, I secured major coffee-chain sponsorship for Canfar's One Million Red Ribbons campaign, managing the relationship and powering volunteers with much-needed hot drinks on a very cold day. I also wrote sponsorship proposals, provided input on organizational communications strategy, formulated youth HIV/AIDS curriculum, and crafted informative web content. Additionally, I worked closely with the events team to co-ordinate logistics for the annual Bloor Street Entertains gala, raising over $400,000 for HIV/AIDS research. Show less
