Chris has been enthusiastic about his term of service throughout the past year. Assigned to a local charter school, Chris has supported elementary and middle school students in their academic development and personal growth. Other Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps team members look up to Chris. He is communicative, personable and kind. Chris is the kind of person anyone would want to have on their staff.

      • I was responsible for administering the Read Right literacy program to about 20 students a day, and teaching concepts such as literal, inferential and critical thinking. I taught a diverse group of students, including many immigrants learning English as a second, third or fourth language, and several students with learning disabilities. • I led students on hikes through the San Bernardino National Forest and taught classes on plants, mammals, astronomy and many others. Although responsible for teaching these classes effectively, my main priority was always student safety, as we often encountered adverse weather conditions. Once a week I work with Leo, a man in his mid 50s who plans on entering a local community college soon. He wants to improve his reading and writing as much as possible before he enrolls, so that is where we focus during our weekly sessions. He reads constantly on his own, and picks out several articles he had trouble comprehending for us to review together. Most weeks he also writes a short paragraph, which I then revise with him. I focus on the principles of good writing: be concise, use active verbs, correct style and sentence structure, etc. Show less

      • At Alianza, a K-8 public school, I was a teacher's assistant, tutor, and coach. During the day I worked with small groups of students to improve their reading, writing and math skills, which required close collaboration with classroom teachers. Watsonville is about 95 percent Latino; most students speak English fluently as a second language, but many struggle in reading and writing. I also conducted reading assessments, tutored struggling readers, assisted in the school’s garden club, and helped coach the boys and girls basketball teams, and the flag football team.
