I worked with Chris at HTM for 7 years, reporting directly to him for much of that time. Chris confidently led the organisation through several years of significant growth, seeming to handle with ease the many daily challenges he must have faced. With incredible dedication, he was across all aspects of the business; my Systems/Development team works on projects for all areas of HTM and Chris could easily discuss and make informed decisions on any of those. And at any time he was always happy to answer questions and listen and chat - I can't imagine how someone with so much responsibility could be so positive all the time, but I think it was a big part of the positive company culture we developed. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with Chris and hope that one day I might get the chance again!

Not everyone can say they had a manager who was also a mentor and coach, but I can. I have no doubt many of my former colleagues would say the same, with Chris’ ability to lead by example and his ‘open-door’ attitude to leadership. I had the pleasure of working under Chris for three years during his role as Director & Group General Manager at HTM—I reported directly to him for a year in my time as Marketing Manager. I was always in awe of the way Chris could command a room and get people from all levels of the business on board with ideas—even people who were on completely different pages to start with. Not to mention, his cracking sense of humor, especially in the most trying situations, made it a work environment I thoroughly enjoyed stepping into every day. As a leader or as colleague, Chris has my highest recommendation.

I had the pleasure of working with Chris for nearly two years at HTM. His knowledge of and passion for Niseko and its customers is second to none. Chris is one of the few leaders I’ve worked with who manages to be extremely hands-on without ever micro-managing. He is a voice of reason and a savvy commercial mind. He has expert level understanding across all aspects of ski tourism/hospitality, enabling HTM to expand rapidly into new offerings during his tenure. Chris is bilingual, but more than that, he forges great professional and social relationships with native Japanese and ‘foreign’ colleagues alike. Due to COVID-19, Chris had to manage the forced redundancy of a high percentage of the staff at HTM, an extraordinarily difficult task which he managed with composure and grace. I hope to have another opportunity to work with Chris in the future. If you are considering hiring him, I suggest offering him whatever he asks. You’ll make that investment back, and plenty more.
