I oversaw a 17-person department that produced the best hyperlocal product in the U.S., and later served as the online specialist. YourHub is the grassroots journalism arm of The Denver Post. My job was eliminated via a reduction in workforce on April 24, 2014.I have extensive experience as a copy editor, department manager, writer and reporter. I am familiar with CMS (Dashboard and WordPress), SEO, social media, AP style. I love accepting new challenges and turning them into tasks successfully completed. One of the goals of YourHub is to prepare young talent for jobs elsewhere in The Denver Post newsroom. Five of my employees made such a move, and a sixth took a job with the organization forming the new college playoff system. Show less

    • Sports Copy Editor
      • Oct 2005 - Jun 2012

I was a copy editor for The Post's sports department, which was honored to receive many APSE awards during my tenure, including the Triple Crown (best daily section, best Sunday section, best special section). I took pride in editing in detail, fact-checking, correcting errors in grammar and spelling, and writing headlines that often won in-house competitions. My job was eliminated in a reduction of workforce on June 16, 2012. During this time I also served as the editorial director for woodypaige.com, an online venture led by the venerable columnist and ESPN personality. Show less

I was part of a three-person management team that led the Press Democrat sports department during a time when reducing the San Francisco Chronicle's penetration in Sonoma County was a primary goal. We slashed the Chron's market share considerably. I was proud to work with such top managers as Don Shelton (Seattle Times), Glen Crevier (Minneapolis Star Tribune) and Rick Vacek. • The Bend Bulletin

    • Sports editor/copy editor/reporter/writer
      • 1981 - 1985

I was hired as sports editor, which entailed leading a small staff, reporting on an active area in a resort town in Central Oregon, being the main copy editor, writing a weekly column and handling all the "little stuff" that managing a department demands. I broke the biggest story of my sports career here. Dan Fouts, the NFL quarterback, lived outside of Sisters, Oregon. I was invited by the president of the local Rotary Club to attend Dan's speech to the club. During the speech, Fouts announced that he would cross the NFLPA picket lines and attend San Diego Chargers camp in La Jolla, Calif. I wrote a story for The Bulletin that was picked up by United Press International and went worldwide. I made several good hires during my time, including Jim Thomas, a veteran journalist who currently writes for Major League Baseball, and Ron Quant, who left print journalism for his first love, television, and now works for the Portland Trail Blazers.
