Built the VoteUp app (https://voteupapp.com) to help small groups make better decisions faster. I worked on this project part time while being initiated as a Navy Spouse and a father. The app is a modest success: regularly in the top five results for "voting" apps in the App Store; ~40k users in the last year. At Mapbox Japan, I worked on the technical challenges of adapting Mapbox's products to the Japanese market. My primary focus over the last year and a half was building a Japanese-language geo-search service -- and on building the local team that would own the service. As a member of Mapbox's core map rendering team, I work on a pair of open source projects: mapbox-gl-native and mapbox-gl-js. This rendering technology is at the center of the hundreds of millions of maps viewed every month by people using Mapbox-powered products, from interactive graphics in the New York Times to Snapchat's playful-but-sometimes-revelatory video sharing maps. Because the renderer consumes data specified in an open format, the renderer has also entered widespread use outside of direct Mapbox customers. My particular area of focus has been text rendering, which turns out to be surprisingly difficult when you're drawing text using OpenGL on top of a 3D map. Some fun challenges have included: - Rearchitecting collision detection and rendering to support smooth animations and clearly legible labels in pitched maps (this work was critical to support navigation use cases) - Adding support for Arabic text shaping and bi-directional text layout - Building support for CJK text: from vertical layout to specialized line-breaking to engineering around the costs of massive amount of data in CJK fonts. My work requires fluency in several technologies: - C++ for core cross-platform native development - JS for web version of renderer - OpenGL/WebGL - Objective-C/Swift for iOS platform support - Java/Kotlin and JNI for Android platform support - Node.js with native bindings for server-side components Show less As a member of Mapbox's core map rendering team, I work on a pair of open source projects: mapbox-gl-native and mapbox-gl-js. Agile transition provided greater backlog/roadmap visibility externally, largely eliminated painful "QA bottlenecking" problem, increased self-direction within the teams, increased customer contact, and helped us ship earlier with smaller and simpler products. * Shipped "1.0" version of new Security and Compliance Analytics project which had been struggling with a very large set of requirements. Shifted to "quarterly release cadence" in order to get clearer/simpler product management and more opportunities to integrate feedback from the field. Successfully delivered "1.1" release within one quarter of initial release. * Initiated integration projects with the existing Tivoli Security and Compliance Management product; OpenPages GRC, and the IBM License Management Tool. TSCM and ILMT integrations depended on very close collaboration with software developers in IBM's Krakow Software Lab. Key achievements include: * Delivered "8.0" release of BigFix Platform, which allowed applications developed on top of the platform much greater flexibility to define their own user interfaces. This project required synchronized development work across all of BigFix R&D. This was the largest project BigFix had ever undertaken, and we believe it laid the groundwork for continuing engineering and sales success. * Assisted in the pre-acquisition "due-diligence" process, including strategy and "technical deep dive" presentations to IBM executives. * Re-built the BigFix intern program: got undergraduates to produce valuable extensions to our core product; recruited the next generation of BigFix technical leadership. * Drove "customer interaction" program that helped maintain the close personal links to our customers that we had benefited from when we were a small, desperate start-up. * Developed internal team leadership and process so that my transition out of the platform team was minimally disruptive.

    • Platform Engineering Lead
      • Aug 2007 - Jul 2008

Continued work as developer for BigFix "Unified Management Platform" but with expanded responsibility for mentorship/team development, as well as schedule/project management responsibility.

    • Software Engineer
      • Jul 2004 - Aug 2007

Developer working on all aspects of the BigFix "Unified Management Platform". Primary areas of focus were client/relay/server communications and endpoint user interaction.

    • Software Engineering Intern
      • Jul 2001 - Jun 2004

Worked half-time on everything that a small startup needed: support, documentation, testing, tool development, software development. Lead tester on first versions of the "BigFix Enterprise" management platform; key developer of the first application to use that management platform (the application is now known as "Patches for Windows" and it continues to be a core part of IBM Tivoli Endpoint Manager's business).
