This is an ongoing, self-funded research project focussing on Second World War coastal crust defences in Filey Bay. Throughout the project I have gathered relevant information needed to fully identify the original extent of the site and create a Desk Based Assessment. This has included sourcing and interpreting period aerial photographs, consulting the Defence of Britain Project and also liaison with landowners and other stakeholders. The development and implementation of effective survey strategy to gather key data within defined time frame has been key to the project. A complete photographic record and condition reports has been compiled, along with the development of user interface using Google Earth and QGIS. A project archive has been used to develop interpretive materials which will form part of the future management strategy for the site. User behaviour data from Google Earth interface along with Google Sketch up is currently used to provide information for the future use in the study of World War 2 defences. The next aim of this project is to publish the survey's results and also create an easy to follow archaeological manual, outlining how to investigate such sites to ascertain their purpose and defensive strategy using basic archaeological methods. All data from the project will be submitted to the relevant Historical Environment Records. Show less
